Skyscrapers
Given that the city invented them, it only makes sense that it would be full of them. Skyscrapers are a huge part of the Chicago heritage and the best examples can be depicted in the Art Deco-inspired masterpieces from the 20s. One would think that these buildings would stand out in the modern age and they do to a certain point, but there is something about them that allows them to mesh with modern designs today as well. Magnificent Mile
Speaking of bustling buildings and active nightlife, you simply cannot forget about the Magnificent Mile. As you’ve probably already guessed this is a strip of glitzy stores and buildings that run for a mile along the North Michigan Avenue. The name was coined in 1947 and stuck ever since, and while it is only a mile long, you could easily burn an entire day here checking out innovative stores like Neiman Marcus and Tiffany and Company. Christmas time is one of the best times to visit, as it’ll be packed with shoppers, sales galore, lights, and decorations that will take your breath away.

You simply cannot mention Chicago without mentioning one of the grandfathers of the city. While he has nothing to do with the discovery or the development of Chicago, he has certainly helped it go down in infamy. And, one of the ways he has done that is by offering a seven-mile strip of Prairie-style homes inspired by other innovative architects like George Maher. Today it will be hard to believe that these buildings were considered ugly and out of place when they were first developed, but it’s fair to say that they were way ahead of their time. They fit in more than nicely today.
